Cape Verde
Maio
MAIO Blue Island
welcome you to this peaceful and beautiful place
The island of Maio is the closest to Santiago island and to the capital city of Cape Verde, Praia (10mi).
Maio offers vast extents of fine white sand beaches contrasting with the turquoise blue of its warm and crystalline waters. The most notable beaches are: the beach of Porto Inglês, Ponta Preta, Real Beach, Pau Sêco, Porto Cais, Bitche Rotcha Beach and Boca do Morro.
Temperature on the island ranges from 25° to 32° all round the year. Water temperature is a steadily warm 24° to 28°. During the nesting season, it is not rare to see sea turtles laying eggs on these beaches.
The Villa El Patio is situated in front of the beach of the only town of the island, Vila do Maio, also known as Vila do Porto Inglês (City of the English Harbor) because of the former English activity which developed there for economic reasons.
Its most prominent monuments are the exquisite parochial church of Portuguese influence, the fort of Maio (built in the 18th century to defend the island against pirates) and the lighthouse of São José.
A little bit further north are other places of interest such as Calheta, a small fishermen’s village set on a gorgeous bay.
Further north and inward of the island is Cascabulho, a peaceful village known for its traditional homemade tapestry craft.
